What Are Mudras?

Mudras are symbolic hand gestures used in Hindu and Buddhist traditions for thousands of years. The word "mudra" comes from Sanskrit, meaning "seal" or "gesture." Each finger is associated with one of the five elements (Pancha Mahabhuta), and touching fingers together creates specific energy circuits that influence physical and mental states.

Pancha Mahabhuta

  • Agni (Fire) - Thumb - Transformation
  • Vayu (Air) - Index - Movement
  • Akasha (Space) - Middle - Expansion
  • Prithvi (Earth) - Ring - Stability
  • Apas (Water) - Little - Flow

⚡ Practice Tips

Start with 3-5 minutes of practice, gradually extending as comfortable. Both hands should form the mudra unless specified otherwise. Practice in a quiet space with natural breathing. Mudras work best when combined with meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), and focused intention.

Manual Gesture Notation (MGN)

MGN is a precise notation system for describing hand positions. It specifies palm orientation, finger states (straight, bent, curled), and touch contacts between fingers. This allows for accurate documentation and learning of complex mudra formations.
